Ways to check UCR status
| Where | Search by | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| FMCSA SAFER UCR lookup | USDOT number, MC or MX number, or freight forwarder number | The UCR registration data on record for the company |
| The UCR Plan's national registration system | USDOT number | Your registration record by year |
| Our filing flow | USDOT number | Each recent year as registered or unregistered, before you file or pay |
Search with the full USDOT number of the business that registers. A DBA name, a truck number, or another company's USDOT number won't return your record.
How do you look up UCR status step by step?
On FMCSA's SAFER UCR lookup:
- Open the UCR query on SAFER (linked in the sources below).
- Enter the USDOT number, or the MC, MX, or freight forwarder number.
- Read the result for the registration year you need.
In our filing flow:
- Enter your USDOT number on the filing form. Looking it up costs nothing.
- Open the registration year list. Each year carries a status badge, such as Registered or Unregistered, and the current year is marked.
- Pick a year that is already registered, and the flow tells you before you go further. If an earlier year is still unregistered, it warns you about that too.
Which year should show as registered?
From January 1 to September 30, the current calendar year must be registered. From October 1, the next year opens too: 2027 registration opens on October 1, 2026 and is due by December 31, 2026, so by then both 2026 and 2027 should show as registered.

What a current carrier's lookup should show
| Date | Registered years you need |
|---|---|
| January 1 to September 30, 2026 | 2026 |
| October 1 to December 31, 2026 | 2026, and 2027 by December 31 |
| From January 1, 2027 | 2027 |
What should you check in the result?
- The registration year: a registration for last year doesn't cover this one.
- The status: registered means the year is filed and paid; unregistered means it still needs filing.
- The business name, which should match your USDOT record.
- The vehicle count or bracket, if shown, which should match the vehicles you operate.
If your fleet grew into a higher bracket or your USDOT details changed, fix your USDOT record with FMCSA before your next filing, so the next registration starts from the right count.
Why might a paid UCR registration not show yet?
- The filing is still being processed after payment.
- The registration was filed under a different USDOT number, such as a related company's.
- It was filed for a different registration year than the one you are checking.
- Whoever took your payment has not submitted the registration yet.
Before paying again, ask whoever filed it for the order number and the registration year. If you filed with us, your confirmation email arrives once the UCR Plan issues it, and you can contact us with your order number.
What if a year shows as unregistered?
File it. If you operated interstate in that year, it still needs a registration, and a past year can still be filed. States can cite carriers for operating unregistered, and fines are set by each state. Our filing flow flags an earlier unregistered year when you choose a registration year.
When should you check your UCR status?
- Before you renew, so you don't pay twice for a year that is already registered.
- A few days after you file, to confirm the year now shows as registered.
- When a letter, email, or call says you are unregistered. Look your USDOT number up yourself, through SAFER or the UCR Plan's system, instead of paying through a link in the message.
- Before you book a carrier, if you are a broker or shipper checking a partner.
Do you need to carry proof of UCR in the truck?
UCR has no sticker or decal to carry, and federal law limits the identification states can require you to display. Officers check registration electronically by USDOT number at roadside inspections and audits. Keep the confirmation the UCR Plan issues with your compliance records in case you need to show it.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a UCR number I can look up?
No. There is no separate UCR number. Look up registration by USDOT number, or on SAFER by MC, MX, or freight forwarder number.
Can I check another company's UCR status?
Yes. FMCSA's SAFER UCR lookup is public, so a broker or shipper can check a carrier by USDOT number before booking a load.
Does checking UCR status cost anything?
No. The SAFER lookup is free, and looking up your USDOT number in our filing flow is free: you pay only if you choose to file.
